Deforestation Education

Below are some great ways that YOU
can do to help make a positive difference...

Great words to remember:
"What you do makes a difference, but you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."
- Jane Goodall

Avoid Palm Oil
Palm oil is in over 50% of all products in America...
From cookies, peanut butter, make-up, shampoos, box goods, candy, and a lot more. The way it is being produced is unsustainable, and causing orangutans (as well as a lot of other species) to go into extinction.

Donate, Adopt, Purchase & Volunteer!

  • Donating is one of the most beneficial things you can do to help save orangutans. Your donation could help save a life!

  • Adopting an orangutan though an organization is great! You get photos, learn their amazing stories, and even get updates on how the orangutan you adopted is doing.

  • Purchasing stuff from a orangutan organization is fantastic! You get some awesome stuff, all while helping save the species.

  • Volunteering is very helpful, and a great learning opportunity. If you're interested in volunteering, contact your favorite orangutan organization.

  • Fundraising is fun and it's a great way to get the message out about the problems facing orangutans. Check out the Sumatran Orangutan Society's Guide To Fundraising... (Click here)

Quick ways to help...
  • Write to your local legislators and The President.  Ask them not to explore palm oil as a biofuel option.  Cutting down rainforests to grow palm oil is not a "green" substitute for gasoline.

  • Write to Indonesian and Malaysian government officials.  Ask them to preserve their precious natural resources.  They are the only countries in the world that have wild orangutans!

  • Help with reforestation projects.  Go to forests4orangutans.org for more information.

  • Buy Orangutan Art - 50% of each purchase goes to orangutan conservation.

 Complaining
to Companies

Complaining to companies about the use of palm oil in their products is a great way to help!
The reason companies like Nestle, Unilever, KFC and Cadburys have cleaned up there act when it comes to palm oil, is because people like yourself have contacted them and complained!

It is simple, choose a company, go to their website, lodge a complain or find there phone number and give them a call. With customer pressure, companies make changes. By companies removing crude palm oil from their products, hundreds of innocent lives are saved, along with thousands of kilometers of rainforest.

Most of the world's global corporate giants have taken action when it comes to the use of crude palm oil in their products, except a few. Coles & Woolworth's are some of the world's biggest palm oil uses, yet they haven't signed any forms to do with switching sustainable or removing palm oil from their products.

Fundraising

Fundraising is a great way to financially support the fantastic orangutan centres across Borneo and Sumatra.

You can contact groups like BOS and AOP to find out how to get involved in fundraisers in your area. Or you could get your school or workplace involved with a fundraiser and donate the profits to one of the organisations. Maybe even make some pamphlets about the palm oil crisis containing a list of products that contain palm oil and hand them out to the public.

Also, aim to avoid purchasing timbers or furniture made from these types of wood: teak, ironwood, ebony, mahogany and sandalwood. They are all sourced from South-East Asian rainforests! If you're not sure - ask the person who is selling you the timber where it has come from. If they say Indonesia or Malaysia - it is most likely rainforest sourced wood!
